Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) Analysis


Operating Deflection Shape (ODS) is a motion of one point relative to another at a specific frequency. With the measurement points geometrically well-distributed over a machine, the signatures can be digitally processed and stored, allowing the actual motion of the machinery to be captured, slowed down, and amplified to an animated image interpretable by human eyes.  The ODS provides a picture of how a machine or structure moves during actual operation at specific frequencies of interest. Combined with modal analysis, it provides a comprehensive dynamic behaviour of the machine and hence helps to determine the route cause of high vibration. It gives a comprehensive measurement data namely, the magnitude spectrum (acceleration, velocity or displacement) and phase spectrum of the machine outline.
